ScinoPharm and the Avian Flu Epidemic

In the recent news media, coverages regarding the avian flu epidemic and the Taiwan Government's commissioning of ScinoPharm Taiwan to assist in the case of an epidemic, a complete precautionary measure at this point, may not have been entirely accurate regarding some of the relevant facts. We provide the following clarifications:

1. Since its incorporation eight years ago, ScinoPharm's sole business has been the research, development and manufacture of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). ScinoPharm has worked with many pharmaceutical companies in the world, including some of the largest brand and generic leaders of the West. ScinoPharm has been chosen by many of these companies as a preferred supplier due to its adherence to the highest standards in intellectual property protection as well as our full compliance with international Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) and Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) practices. As a Taiwanese company, ScinoPharm, of course, also observes all laws and regulations of Taiwan as well as recognizes its corporate obligations and responsibilities to the general public in Taiwan.

2. To be prepared for a possible outbreak of the avian flu, many countries around the world are taking active precautionary measures. To protect our citizens' health and safety, the Taiwan Government has invested a great deal of resources to avert possible catastrophes. As one of the largest API producers in Taiwan, ScinoPharm, if and when called upon, is obligated to fully support the Government's policy, and to utilize its equipment and technical capability to safeguard our citizens.

3. Meanwhile, ScinoPharm is in contact with the patent holder of the effective drug to combat the avian flu virus, seeking an official authorization to participate in the production of the drug substance in light of its current shortage.

ScinoPharm wishes to express appreciation and gratitude to the Taiwan Government and our worldwide partners for their support that enables ScinoPharm to operate in a state-of-the-art facility in its present location that is fully approved by the US FDA.
